''Too'' ve ''Very'' Arasındaki Farklar

İngilizcede sık kullanımı olan ''Too'' ve ''Very'' ifadeleri genelde karıştırılmaktadır ve bu sebeple ifadelerimizde anlam karmaşası meydana gelebilmektedir. Tabi bu yayınımızı okuduktan sonra bu kompleks durum artık bizler için geçerliliğini yitirmiş olacaktır.

Girizgah olarak bu iki tabirimiz hem sıfat hem de zarftan önce gelebilir. İlişkili olduğu zarfa veya sıfata (çok) manasında güçlülük ve aşırılık katmaktadır. Tabi ikisinin de birbirinden ayrıldığı noktalar bulunmaktadır.

İlk olarak ''very'' çok, fazla, anlamı katmasının yanında cümleye veya söylemimize olumsuzluk anlamı katmaz. Bir şey çoktur, aşırıdır lakin olumsuz anlamda değil. ''Too'' Söz konusu olduğunda ise dikkatimizi çekmelidir ki ortada olumsuzluk anlamı içeren bir aşırılık, sıra dışılık mevcuttur.

1) The exam was  very difficult.
2) The exam was too difficult.

İlk cümlede sınav çok zordu anlamını çıkarıyoruz ancak zor olsa da imkansız değildi, ortada aşılamayacak bir durum yoktu ancak ikinci cümlede sınav olabildiğince zordu ve bu kadar zor olması bu sınavdan başarılı olmayı imkansız hale getiriyordu.

1) The watch is very expensive.
2) The watch is too expensive.


Yine aynı şekilde iki örneğe göz attığımızda, birinci cümlede saat fahiş bir bedele sahip lakin bütçemizi zorlayarak, bazı harcamalarımızdan kısıntı yaparak bu saati satın alabilme olanağımız bulunmaktadır. İkinci cümlede ise değil bu saati satın almak, saati alabilme hayaline düşmek bile bir saçmalık olarak hafızamızda yer ediyor. 

1) Sinem is very tall.
2) Sinem is too tall. 


Birinci ifadede Sinem'in boyu çok uzun ama bu standartlarda muadilleri elbet var dünyanın en uzun boyuna falan sahip değil ama boyu çok uzun. İkinci ifade de ise, Sinem'in boyu o kadar uzun ki sıradan ölçülerdeki bir kapıdan geçerken başını eğmesi gerekiyor gibi gibi..

Bir takım örneklerle havsalamıza iyice gömelim. Artık aradaki ayrımı yapabilmek pek de zor olmaz diye tahmin ediyoruz.

- The tea is very hot, but I can drink it.
* Çay çok sıcak ama içebilirim.
- The tea is too hot, I cannot drink it.
-* Çay çok sıcak içemem. (aşırı sıcak, içilmesi mümkün değil)

- She is too young to get married.
- English grammar is too difficult for me to understand.
- She is very young. She shouldn't be getting married at this age.
- You’re driving too fast.
- The bus was very crowded.
- Tom is a very strong man.
- A horse can run very fast.
- He was too old to swim.
- I was too sick to stand.
- I think you're too picky.
- We're still too far away.
- Don't judge me too harshly.
- I think you worry too much.
- It is too expensive for me to buy.
- It's too hot to do anything today.
- Mustafa is too stubborn to apologize.
- That bicycle is too small for you.

Ardern gives birth to baby girl

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is the second elected leader in the world to hold office while pregnant. Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto gave birth while she was prime minister in 1990.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern gave birth to her first child, a girl, on Thursday, Ardern said in a posting on Instagram.

Ardern, 37, became New Zealand's youngest prime minister when she took office through a coalition deal last year after an inconclusive election, and now becomes the first woman in the country's history to give birth while in office.

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters has stepped in as acting prime minister and will run the country for the next six weeks while Ardern takes maternity leave, according to an agreement they published earlier.

Ardern gave birth in Auckland Hospital, the country's largest public hospital, with her partner, television presenter Clarke Gayford, at her side.
