Formülümüz şu şekildedir;

am/is/are  yardımci fiilinin past participle şekli olan,

was/were  + verb + ing

Örneklerle devam edelim..

- They were waiting for the bus.

- Otobüs bekliyorlardı.

- I was having a bath at nine o'clock.

- Dokuzda duş alıyordum.

- My father was watching TV

- Babam televizyon seyrediyordu.

- I was sitting on the patio, and I was waiting for you.

- Avluda oturuyordum ve seni bekliyordum.

⟾  Sonu tek  -e harfi ile biten fiilere -ing takısı getirirken  e harfi düşer ve ekimizi öyle ilave ederiz.

Come > Coming

Engage > Engaging
Have    > Having

Ancak sone çift ''ee'' harfleriyle biten fiillerde bunu yapmayız.

Agree > Agreeing

See    > Seeing

Sonu ''ie'' harfleriyle biten kelimelerde <ie> harflerini kaldırır ve ''y'' ekleriz ardından da -ing.

Lie > Lying

➽ Şimdiyse Simple Past Tense, Past Progressive(Continuous) zamanlarında epey kullanımı olan

When/While unsurlarını bu zamanlar dahilinde cümle dizilimi ve anlam açısından nasıl kullandığımızı görelim.

Genel manada zarf ve bağlaç pozisyonları ve görevleri olan When/While ikilisini bu konumuzla bağdaştırdığımızda  ikisi için şöyle bir Türkçe karşılık versek pek yanlış yapmış olmayız.

While : - iken

When : - diğinde, - dığında.

Aslına bakarsanız ikisi içinde Türkçe karşılık bulma söz konusu olduğunda bir tıpatıplık, bir aynılık söz konusudur ancak hangisi Past Tense, hangisi Past Progressive zamanıyla kullanılır bunu kavradığımızda, bu keşmekeş durum ortadan kalkacaktır.

- I was walking down the street, when you made a phone call to me.

- Beni aradığında, caddeden iniyordum.

Örnekteki cümlede iki eylemde aynı zamanda gerçekleşiyor ancak bir tanesi (yürümek işi) diğer eylem  (telefon araması) gerçekleşmeden önce vardı ve devam ediyordu.

- While I was walking down the street, it began to rain.

- Caddeden iniyorken,(caddeden yürüyordum)  yağmur başladı.

- While it was snowing, I lit a cigarette.

- Kar yağıyorken (kar yağıyordu) bir sigara yaktım.
- When I lit a cigarette, it was snowing.
- Sigara yaktığımda kar yağıyordu.

- When I got to school, Students were talking in Japanese or Chinese.

- Okula vardığımda öğrenciler Japonca yada Çince konuşuyorlardı.

Görüldüğü gibi [While= Past Progressive] söz konusu olduğunda, [When= Simple Past Tense] söz konusu olduğunda kullanılıyor ve ifade edilmesi gereken bağlaç anlamıda oldukça açık şekilde göz önünde. Önemli olan teknik açıdan When/While ikilisinin hangi zaman ile beraber kullanıldığını kavramak olacaktır.

Olumsuz formu ise;

was not/were not    |   wasn't/weren't

- No, I wasn't listening to music when you called me.

- We were not going to school in that day..
